Blood sugar handling imbalances are numerous. They can cause hormonal imbalances, allergies, Vitamin B deficiency, a ricochet among the pancreas-liver-adrenal glands, acid reflux, headache first thing in the morning, hiatal hernia, mental dullness, sensitivity to noise, low tolerance to pain, and many more symptoms.
Here is how carbohydrates affect the body:
You eat and digest food (pizza, donut, crackers, spaghetti, soda, etc). Digested food releases glucose.
- Glucose enters the bloodstream and raises blood sugar.
- The rise in blood sugar triggers the pancreas to release insulin.
- Insulin tells cells to either use the glucose or store it for energy.
- The less energy burned, the more fatty acids are stored.
- More stored fatty acids may result in weight gain.
Here are some quick and important changes to make in your life NOW:
- Reduce carbohydrates until sugar cravings and/or fatigue goes away (stay within 60-100 grams of carbs a day – NOT including vegetables). Read labels! These are things like muffins, cereal, cornbread, bread, crackers, rice, anything made with white flour, etc. No potatoes at all!
- Eat every three hours: breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack.
- Increase protein (see below) and especially saturated fat intake (helps you to feel full and good for your cells, brain, and hormones). Use healthy fats in your meals, including healthy extra-virgin olive oil (homemade salad dressings), organic butter (NEVER margarine of any kind), and unrefined organic coconut oil (when sauteing or cooking), sliced avocados.
- Exercise doing what you love doing – walking, strolling, jogging, hiking, biking, dancing, roller skating, taking stairs, shoveling snow, etc.
- Never skip a meal
- Make a three-day food journal JUST tracking carbs – be aware of what you are putting in your mouth!
