If you have children who are very selective with what they eat? Meet little Andrew Price, fictitious great-great-nephew of the Weston A. Price, whose adventures teach children about whole foods in an easy way. Read on for Heather Wilkinson’s review on Selene River Press.
“How astonished would your kids be to learn that less than a century ago there were still people in the world who didn’t eat any food from cans, boxes, or packages? How impressed would they be to learn that kids from those places grew up to be quite a bit healthier than we are today? (Plus they had virtually no cavities and much straighter teeth!)
This amazing fact was discovered by an adventurous dentist in the 1930s. His name was Weston A. Price, and he studied traditional diets around the world. As reported in his groundbreaking book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, Price learned that indigenous peoples who lived entirely on whole, unpolluted foods were virtually free of degenerative disease, while those who made the switch to refined foods immediately developed the same degenerative diseases that plague us today.
This may sound like heavy stuff for a children’s book, but The Adventures of Andrew Price is anything but. The story finds little Andrew Price, the fictitious great-great-nephew of the globetrotting dentist, leading his classmates on a wonderful show and tell adventure. From the children in a special valley in Switzerland to the Eskimos of Alaska to the tribes of Africa, our young narrator explains that in each and every case, once modern foods like sugar, pastries, jams, jellies, and chocolate were introduced, cavities went up and health went down.
Young readers will delight in imagining the very different lives children once lived in other times and places. But perhaps more importantly, they may become curious about eating a more traditional diet at home. After all, amazing things can happen when kids are inspired by other kids.
This winning children’s book was created by Sandrine Love of Nourishing Our Children, in collaboration with Mohammad Naser, who also provided the charming illustrations. The Adventures of Andrew Price is available from Selene River Press in a hardcover edition or as a PDF. Upon the purchase of either, you’ll also get a link to an online version of the book where your little one can hear the pages turning each time you flip to the next part of the story. For even more fun, you’ll also get a downloadable coloring page upon check out.
Children’s books are often fun. Sometimes they’re even important. We believe The Adventures of Andrew Price is both.”
