Ever wonder why your urine is neon yellow when you take synthetic vitamins?
You cannot compare the amounts (milligrams) of vitamins in a synthetic formula to that of a food concentrate. Foods (e.g. organic kale or carrots) and food concentrates contain small amounts of hundreds of nutrients not listed on the label. Food concentrates are low dose and high potency, whereas synthetics are high dose and low potency.
Real Vitamin C or synthetic?
So you go to the health food store or local grocery store to get your Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) to make sure you don’t get sick, right? Yes, abnormally massive amounts of anything synthetic will force metabolic pathways in the body. Doesn’t mean that it works.
There is a whole complex of synergy to Vitamin C. This is the difference between whole food nutrition (all benefits and the complete complex) and synthetic vitamins (just the active ingredient). The whole complex, as shown in Figure 1, has other natural factors. The synthetic vitamin will have just the ‘active ingredients’ of ascorbic acid and other additives. This is why your urine is neon yellow! Because your body is spitting out what it can’t use or process which is money down the drain.
Notes on natural C complex: The most serious symptom of Vitamin C deficiency is susceptibility to infection. This may precede actual scurvy. The anti-pneumonia factor (Vitamin J) has not yet been isolated or identified but is part of the natural complex. Absorption and retention of the various ascorbic acid factors from food is greater than from synthetic sources. Synthetic vitamin C will not prevent scurvy, because other factors of the complete complex are necessary.
